KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) is the Netherlands’ flag carrier airline, and provides cargo and passenger flights to 145 locations. ESP was already supporting KLM with check-in and boarding solutions for several of its UK Swissport sites when we were asked to provide bespoke airport solutions for two new sites – Southampton Airport and Inverness Airport.
Our client’s challenge
KLM needed us to provide a range of specialist airport IT solutions for each of its new flight locations – including tailored options for airport check-in, ticketing and departure gates. In particular, it needed us to deliver an affordable and flexible check-in kiosk for both sites.
ESP’s bespoke IT solution
We started working on KLM’s check-in kiosk in October 2015, before which we had already worked closely with the airline – meaning we knew exactly what it required from its IT. We had found that existing airport kiosks were expensive and offered users little choice; so, we decided to develop a bespoke design for KLM. Our kiosk not only incorporated the latest hardware, but could also have optional software installed (such as payment and common-use self-service software, and our eDCS check-in solution). We wanted our kiosk to be modular, so we decided that the outer structure would be designed like a server rack –letting us fit shelving and customise each new kiosk so that it could be used with different devices. This meant we could use one design for a number of different purposes. The kiosks were remotely monitored and managed by us to ensure the systems always ran smoothly.
Another great outcome
Our bespoke kiosks have now been deployed for KLM at Southampton Airport and Inverness Airport. They successfully satisfy KLM’s price point and deliver all the functionality that the airline needs. Now that we have a finished ESP kiosk available, we hope that more airports, airlines and solution suppliers will recognise the benefits and implement it.
A bespoke check-in kiosk that enhances efficiency at KLM’s two new sites.
