KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) contacted ESP in October 2015 about implementing check-in kiosks at two new locations in the UK – Southampton Airport and Inverness Airport. The airline had just added the routes to its offering, and needed check-in kiosks, agent-controlled check-in solutions and boarding gate systems for each. Having worked with KLM in the past (providing airport solutions at several UK Swissport sites), we knew exactly what type of functionality it required from its check-in kiosks. Instead of supplying it with an off-the-shelf option, we built a bespoke kiosk that was specially designed to meet the airline’s needs.
ESP’s check-in kiosk
We wanted KLM to be able to purchase an affordable check-in kiosk that could be customised to the company’s specification – something that was not currently available from UK kiosk manufacturers. We had been researching the market for some time, and had found that kiosks were very expensive and limited in terms of their design. Although we had supplied airlines with such off-the-shelf products in the past, we wanted to create a kiosk that could be customised to suit a particular airline’s individual needs.
While standard check-in kiosks simply supply the hardware for the system, ESP’s bespoke kiosk for KLM (and, in the future, our other clients!) also features software options, such as our eDCS check-in solution and payment solutions. Each aspect of the kiosk can be monitored and managed remotely by the ESP team, ensuring that KLM’s systems are functioning smoothly at all times. If KLM wants its passengers to be able to check-in without the help of airport staff, the kiosk can be fitted with common-use self-service software.
